The Sharland Oasis - Geelong's first ecologically sustainable display home - was designed for Barwon Water to demonstrate leading edge water and energy efficient design, products and materials, as well as to consider more sustainable materials in the construction of the home.

Built by local company Daran Constructions, the Sharland Oasis stretches the limits of the Government's 5 star regulations as well as setting new benchmarks for more environmentally responsible choices in relation to appliances, products and materials.

The fully optioned 8 star version of the home incorporates a plethora of energy efficient and renewable energy ideas that can be applied to all homes, to not only improve the quality of living and comfort, but also dramatically decrease household energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Primary elements include:

  • correct building orientation to maximise northern sun
  • high-efficiency appliances
  • high efficiency space heating and cooling
  • a grid connected solar power system
  • a gas boosted solar hot water system
  • low 'E' argon gas-filled double glazed windows and doors

The water conservation and reuse features of the home will create an extremely water efficient home. All fittings are 3A or 4A water efficient, and rainwater is collected from the roof to flush toilets and supply the dishwasher and washing machine. Grey water is also collected and used to water lawn and garden areas.

With the inclusion of the above features the home is estimated to achieve an 80% reduction in mains water use, and with the grid connected solar power system the home is expected to reduce electricity use by around the same amount.

The Sharland Oasis is located at Lot 7, Lomandra Drive. Hamlyn Heights
