Vision, on behalf of both client and architect, was needed to see beyond a tired and dated 1960's chocolate brown duplex in The Terrace, Ocean Grove.

The final built result provides an example of what can be achieved when working with 'aesthetically challenging' older buildings.

A variety of roof foam. a total refurbishment of the existing buildings and upper and rear additions have created 2 dwellings that capture sweeping ocean views, as well as opening up the interior spaces to north facing outdoor areas.

The use of 'bagged' and painted brickwork in combination with 'Shadowcladd' plantation plywood totally transformed the overall feet of the exterior to provide a low maintenance, contemporary look and feel of the project.

Internally, surfaces were kept simple, with the use of reclaimed timbers and flooring, as well as the client's artwork, providing a warmth and interest throughout.

Primary elements include:

  • retention of the existing building's to minimise materials wastage and the embodied energy of new materials
  • extensive use of demolished roof materials in the new work (joinery, stairs, etc)
  • double glazing and high levels of insulation to minimise heat loss and gain
  • pergolas and shade overhangs to reduce summer heat gains
  • provision of a 'reduced mobility' bathroom to allow home care for an elderly parent
